About Uncle Charlie
The Stage Name "Uncle"
I'll bet a lot of you may be wondering where in the world the "Uncle" part of my stage name come from! My real name is Charlie Bancroft, but I have been touring under the stage name of "Uncle Charlie" since the year 2000.
I actually picked up that name in Uganda, East Africa. I traveled to Uganda once a year from 2000-2004 to lead worship for a group of over 1000 orphan children under the care of Watoto Childcare Ministries.
In Uganda their native languages are Swahili and Luganda, but the majority of the children I worked with could also speak English. In their culture, children who learn English are taught to address all adults as "Uncles and Aunties". This is their way of showing honor and respect to their elders. In our country it would be like children addressing adults as "Ma'am or Sir".
As I came back to the states and shared my stories of working with the Ugandan orphan children, the kids here quickly picked up on the "Uncle" terminology. They all began calling me "Uncle Charlie" here as well! So I just embraced it and hence, a stage name was born!
